On Wednessday Apple’s CEO Mr. Steve Jobs finally unveiled their long speculated latest invention; the iPad. I think Apple did a great job in the way they handled the launching event. They maintained a high degree of secrecy which got many tech-bloggers speculating wildly in anticipation of the new product. The frenzy in the tech-blogosphere could hardly be over-exaggerated. Unlike Google’s launch of Nexus one, Apple did a wonderful job in stirring speculation about the iPad.
The launch was attended only by a group of selected individuals, mostly tech-savvy people. Just like many other bloggers, I could hardly wait to see Apple’s “new Creation”. Since I wasn’t fortunate enough to get an invitation I only had to wait for event videos on Youtube. When finally saw the video and read about the iPad on several blogs and websites I was really impressed by the technology but then I started asking myself who really needs an iPad?
The iPad is no doubt a wonderful device but when and for what do you need it? Is it not just simply an ebook reader? I find it too big for a handset and a lot insufficient (in terms of it functions) for a notebook. I have been asking myself all this while when exactly one needs this device and I can’t find any answers. It’s got a great video quality they say, but why would I watch videos on a smaller screen at home when the screen of TV, Notebook or PC is a lot bigger? I think the iPad is not too different from a netbook except that it has lesser functions than a netbook and since I have never been a netbook fan, I definitely will never like the iPad.
The iPad has neither a camera nor an SD slot which just makes it even worse. My message to Mr. Jobs is great invention but why do need this device if I already have an iPhone, iPod and Macbook? There is no doubt that Apple fans are going to buy this device, but I really think it would be an uphill task to convince the average consumer to buy this device.
I have always seen Apple as the great inventors of our time but am afraid they got it wrong this time. Are they really suggesting when leaving the house I should get the iPad in addition to my Notebook or that I leave my Notebook home and take just the iPad with a very small hard drive and less functions? Anyway, I am very confident Apple is going to make major improvements on subsequent versions of the iPad which will make it more attractive.

Yes, I think exactly like Ngoh. What are the big innovations? The price is okay but who will buy an iPad? The eBook-fan will use the product by Amazon, the business man often writes a lot of emails and therefor isn´t a touchdisplay the best solution. And the young generation of people need something what is small and easy to handle. U won´t put your iPad into your jeans or jacket and always need a bag. That are only some reasons why I will never buy an iPod. I´m sorry Apple .-)

I partly agree with you, Gunnar. Yes, it’s not really a big thing for techies. And yes, it neither substitudes specialised devices like ebook readers or smartphones nor powerful allrounders like decent notebooks are. But maybe it’s THE solution for people who rather need something less powerful and complex than a notebook (or desktop pc), but nevertheless more multi-functional than specialized devices.
It might be THE easy to use multi-media device for the average couch potato who wants to watch photos, read/write mails or surf the net while watching tv. Or who wants to read a book every now and then, download and listen to some music or watch a You Tube video. Additionally it offers apps from the app store for all the daily bits and peaces the average users needs a computer for.
It would be an excellent devices e.g. for my mum. The only down side is the price. I think it will be too expensive for that target group if the Euro price range is somewhere near the Dollar one. If Apple will be able to sell it for 350-650 Euro, it could become a top seller. Of course a couple of improvements like card slot, integrated webcam, flash support or USB port would make it even more persuasive.

also as a subsidized device in the emerging market of (home) media phones, it could be successfull. Nevertheless I don´t see a the need for an iPad for myself, being equipped with an iPhone and a MacBook there is not so much in between that needs coverage.
