On Wednessday Apple’s CEO Mr. Steve Jobs finally unveiled their long speculated latest invention; the iPad. I think Apple did a great job in the way they handled the launching event. They maintained a high degree of secrecy which got many tech-bloggers speculating wildly in anticipation of the new product. The frenzy in the tech-blogosphere could hardly be over-exaggerated. Unlike Google’s launch of Nexus one, Apple did a wonderful job in stirring speculation about the iPad.

After introducing its operating system for mobile devices Android, the search engine giant Google yesterday officially declared its entry into the mobile phone market. Speculations about a “superphone” by Google had been fueled shortly before Christmas after Google provided some of its staff with an in-house developed smart phone. The handheld device called Nexus one was unveiled to the public on Tuesday (05.01.2010). The phone as expected runs on Google’s operating system Android 2.1 and is available in a newly announced Google store.

I guess we all know this feeling when one is in a rush to go somewhere, you’ve got just a couple of minutes to catch your flight, you are worried about the traffic on the road to the airport and you decide you have to leave immediately so that you don’t miss you flight. It’s one of those cold winter days and you turn-off your computer, get your luggage, switch-off the lights, get into your car and hit the road to the airport. After driving for a while you decide to turn down your car heater because it is getting too hot in the car, while you do it occurs to you that in the haste you forgot to turn down your heating system at home. You don’t have time to go back and turn it down and you are going to be out of home for may be two weeks. You know very well how expensive heating is, going back home to turn it off could even be more expensive because you will certainly miss your flight and may be an important appointment. So what can you do?

How versed are you with the latest IT-terminologies? Do you find yourself frequently using an IT-term without really being able to explain what it is? I was just thinking how embarrassing it could if during a high level presentation in front customers you use one these commonly used IT-terminologies and you’re asked to define it and you get stock. You in fact use the term everyday and somehow know what it means but you really can’t explain it. With this in mind I tried to put together and define some frequently used IT-jargons.

1. Apps: App is the short of an application and generally refers to a computer program that helps users to perform specific tasks. Generally apps are often a self-contained environment for performing some well-defined task. This term however is mostly used to refer to application software on mobile devices. It became popular after Apple opened its appstore in which developers could develop and market applications for the iPhone. Microsoft and Google have also followed the lead with their mobile devices.

Microsoft has unveiled its line of Windows smartphones in what is likely to be an offensive against Apple’s iPhone and Google’s Android system. About 30 different types of Windows phones with various designs will be available by the end of the year in more than 20 countries. Seven phone-makers, including Sony, Samsung and Toshiba, and 16 operators including Orange, Vodafone and T-Mobile, are involved in the launch.

Windows mobile 6.5

The phones carry Microsoft’s Windows Mobile 6.5 operating system and combine the ability to make calls, surf the Internet and view videos. The new phones can play music, open Word and Excel documents, and be synchronized over the Internet. With the new operating system, Microsoft hopes to make the case that the devices are not only worthy phones, but also the best option for those who want to take their Windows world with them. With this launch Microsoft is hoping to regain its position on the smartphone market, where it has lost ground. The smartphone sector is considered very promising, with 29% sales increase expected this year.
