Jesse Schell – seines Zeichens Gründer von Schell Games und ehemals Creative Director des Disney Imagineering Virtual Reality Studio, langjähriger Spieleentwickler und angehöriger der Fakultät des Entertainment Technology Center an der Carnegie Mellon Universität – präsentierte kürzlich auf der DICE 2010 Conference seine insights über die Trends und Massenphänomene in der Videospielindustrie der letzten Jahre und ihre (potenzielle) Zukunft.
Als Beispiele für erfolgreiche Spiele nennt er: ClubPenguin, Guitar Hero, Wii / Wii Fit, Mafia Wars und Webkinz.
Laut Schell basieren die meisten der extrem erfolgreichen Videospiel- und Webphänomene der letzten Jahre auf folgenden gemeinsamen Konzepten:
1. Sie machen sich psychologische “Tricks” zu nutze
2. Sie durchbrechen die Grenze zwischen Spielwelt und Realität

Das iPad kommt. Wie der Keynote von Steve Jobs zu entnehmen war richtet sich das iPad primär an Konsumenten. Doch ließe sich das iPad auch im Unternehmenskontext einsetzen?
Betrachtet man Anwendungen für das iPhone wie Citrix Receiver, so kommt man schnell zu dem Schluss, dass das iPad durchaus – und vermutlich sogar direkt ab Launch des Gerätes – im Unternehmenskontext zum Einsatz kommen könnte.
Citrix arbeitet aktuell bereits an einer Adaption seiner Software für das iPad und stößt so die Tür für Unternehmensanwendungen auf dem iPad weit auf. So ermöglicht die Software es bereits heute bestehende Anwendungen von nahezu beliebigen Plattformen auf das iPhone zu streamen und dort zu nutzen.

Das Unternehmen Qualcomm, bekannt durch Mobilfunkchips, gewann auf der CES das Interesse so mancher Newsticker. Auslöser ist ein E-Reader, welches mit einem farbigem Mirasol-Display ausgestattet ist, also nicht mit dem gewohnten E-Ink-Display. Im folgenden Video wird das neuartige Display vorgestellt:

I guess we all know this feeling when one is in a rush to go somewhere, you’ve got just a couple of minutes to catch your flight, you are worried about the traffic on the road to the airport and you decide you have to leave immediately so that you don’t miss you flight. It’s one of those cold winter days and you turn-off your computer, get your luggage, switch-off the lights, get into your car and hit the road to the airport. After driving for a while you decide to turn down your car heater because it is getting too hot in the car, while you do it occurs to you that in the haste you forgot to turn down your heating system at home. You don’t have time to go back and turn it down and you are going to be out of home for may be two weeks. You know very well how expensive heating is, going back home to turn it off could even be more expensive because you will certainly miss your flight and may be an important appointment. So what can you do?

Not much! After more than two years of frustration with Windows Vista, Microsoft finally launched its new operating system Windows 7 which in effect is a correction of problems users faced with Vista. Apart from the fact that Windows 7 is expected to connect better with hardware than Vista does, there are a couple of new features which Windows 7 comes along with.
Some new features of Windows 7
The desktop looks a lot different. Microsoft has replaced much of its blandly pretty nature shots with colorful psychedelic images.
It has a Library feature that allows users to gather files — documents, photos and video; from different places on their computer and group them together in new folders by topic.
It has a new feature called AeroPeek which displays outlines of users open windows behind the window they are working in. A related feature, AeroSnap, allows users to move, shrink and enlarge windows on their screen so that they can see several at once.
Finally, Windows 7 needs less processing power than previous Windows versions, meaning that in theory, users should be able to work faster and in more windows at the same time. In other words, it’s built for today’s warp-speed, multi-tasking lifestyle.
To install Windows 7, you’ll need at least a 1 gigahertz or faster 32-bit (x86) processor, plus at least 2 GB of RAM and at least 16 GB of available hard disk space. If you are upgrading from Vista, it’s supposed to be a very easy: simply insert the disc, and it does the rest (no backup required.) Apple did not only beat expectations on Wall street this week with their huge quarterly earnings boasted by the sales of their iPhone devices, but they announced a range of new products amongst which is a new mouse referred to as the “magic mouse”.
What is special about the magic mouse?
Instead of the conventional mechanical two buttons, scroll wheels or scroll balls, the entire top of the Magic Mouse is a seamless Multi-Touch surface (one huge sensor). Magic Mouse features a seamless touch-sensitive enclosure that allows it to be a single or multi-button mouse with advanced gesture support. Using intuitive gestures, users can scroll through long documents, pan across large images or swipe to move forward or backward through a collection of web pages or photos. Magic Mouse works for left or right handed users and multi-button or gesture commands can be easily configured from within System Preferences. It goes as far as controlling the speed users may want to scroll, apple calls this “momentum scrolling”. Magic Mouse detects and tracks the number of fingers a person is using at any given time. So, two finger swipes allows a user to move between albums in iTunes, web pages in Safari, pictures in iPhoto.
Magic Mouse Technology
Magic mouse uses the same multi-touch technology which apple first used on its iPhone and iPod touch devices. Magic Mouse uses Bluetooth wireless capabilities for its cable-free desk top and secured wireless connection and has the capability of functioning from up to 10 meters away. The mouse is powered by two AA batteries which apple claims should be able to last for up to 4 months. The magic mouse has an automatic power management system which automatically switches it to low power during inactivity.
Magic mouse and compatibility devices
Magic mouse is primarily meant for apple’s iMacs and is compatible with Mac OS X 10.5.8 or later versions. I however think it would be possible to add certain plug-ins and drivers to pcs that would allow compatibility with the magic mouse. Let’s wait and see!
Availability and price
Magic mouse comes as standard with new apple iMacs or can be purchased for $69 dollars in retail stores as early as ending October 2009. I will wait for Windows 7 to be launched to see if it will be compatible with magic mouse, if it is, then I may consider getting one. The features really sound interesting but adapting to new technology usually could be frustrating especially when products are just getting ready for prime time. Is anyone also thinking to get one?

Anlässlich der Internationalen Automobil-Ausstellung (IAA) ist das Thema Elektro- und Hybridauto wieder in aller Munde. Während Mercedes, Audi und BMW mit ihren Neuankündigungen bzw. Desingstudien und Visionen noch relativ „bewährte“ (sofern man bei diesem Thema überhaupt schon von Bewährtem sprechen kann) Wege bei der Batterietechnik beschreiten, so zeigt sich das Fraunhofer Institut für Chemische Technologie (ICT) mit einer neuen Art Batterie für Elektrofahrzeuge innovativ. Das Prinzip ist zwar nicht neu, konnte aber von den Forschern in seiner Leistungsfähigkeit entscheidend verbessert (vier- bis fünf-fache Leistung) und damit für den Automobilbau interessant gemacht werden.
Die sogenannte „Redox-Flow-Batterie“ begegnet einem immer wiederkehrenden Problem von Elektro- und Hybridautos, dass deren uneingeschränkter Alltagstauglichkeit einen Riegel vorschiebt:
