What are you doing? Can I really use 140 characters to tell you what I am doing? I guess I may have to use some different characters other than the Latin alphabet and Arabic numerals to do this, but Twitter says I can as well use them to inform my followers about what I am doing. Twitter is a great tool that can be used to a great effect if appropriately employed. While many in the USA have found effective ways of using twitter, most people in other parts of the world are still trying to figure out how to effectively use this social media tool. Many people in Europe join twitter, have a look at it, don’t understand it, follow a few irrelevant people, get disappointed and never sign in again. So what mistakes may they be making?
Europe is not America!
One of the biggest mistakes twitter users in Europe may be making is that they simply try to copy the same twitter strategy being used in US and want to paste it in Europe. That of course is not working and ends up leaving many people frustrated. One must not be a cultural expert to realize that although both continents may have several similarities, they as well have different patterns of doing business. It is true that twitter is an American discovery, but this does not close the door for people from other parts of the planet to adapt this tool to their environment. Generally, people in America are more tolerant to spam than their counterparts on the other side of the Atlantic. In a survey by the Messaging Anti-Abuse Working Group (MAAWG), more than 800 computer users in the United States and Canada were interviewed and the result was that spam exists there because it is a highly effective way of getting people to buy products. An astounding 12% of respondents actually responded to spam because they were interested in the product/service offered by the spam. While the amount of spam in Europe may currently be surpassing that stemming from the US, the success rates are a lot lower especially in Germany than in the US. Europeans are generally less likely to open spam mails let alone respond to them than Americans. So one fatal mistake twitter users in Europe may not want to make will be to let their followers perceive them as spammers.
Don’ts for European Twitterers
Avoid posting the same tweet several times (spamming): You may be tempted to do this because you think there is something that you wish to share with your new followers. If your followers find your tweets interesting, they will automatically check your older tweets. There is absolutely no need to retweet a message posted a few hours ago because new followers have joined ever since you posted it.
Resist the temptation of posting a new tweet every 2 minutes (spamming): It could be very annoying to see that almost all tweets within an hour come from the same person. You can’t always have something useful to say every 2 minutes. Keep longer intervals between your tweets and don’t just tweet for the sake of tweeting but tweet to pass over information that may be useful to your followers.
Avoid using automated messaging: If you need serious followers you must give a serious impression. Automated welcome messages may be kind but they are in no way personal. Most of these twitter-direct-automated-messages are very annoying as they are often the same message you receive from each person. No welcome message is better than automatically generated message. In some cases users send these messages with a disabled reply function. How can your followers take you serious if you don’t allow them reply to a “direct” message from you?
Keep away from twitter-engines that promise 100s of followers a day: If you really want to get meaningful followers on twitters you may want invest some time to screen their profiles before following or let someone follow you. You will automatically get your target followers coming after you once you follow the right people. You may notice that some of the people who send these messages about getting 100s of followers a day either do not have many followers themselves or they don’t have a niche. Avoid resending such messages no matter what attractive incentives they may be promising.
Tips for Corporate Twitterers in Europe
-
Make your page look serious with your company logo and a responsible picture
-
Select a serious user name, most preferable a name that reflects what you do
-
Don’t forget to insert you URL on your profile
-
Find twitter gurus in your niche and follow them together with their serious followers
-
Send a personal thank you message each time you find that somebody recommended your tweet
-
Block followers that may be unrelated to your ideology (e.g. people offering adult content)
-
Use the search function to find people who post messages that could of interest to you and follow them
What corporate goals can be achieved using twitter?
Twitter may not offer immediate liquid cash but it could offer you several business openings such as:
-
Increasing your web traffic
-
Asserting yourself as a guru
-
Creating awareness about a new product
-
Promoting an event
-
An advertising platform for others who know you and the trust your followers have in you (no rush to this function as it takes time to build trust)
Twitter has been written-off several times by many experts, but it always succeeds to make a comeback each time. Twitter may have some security concerns and it is true that most people who create a twitter account are not regular users or never even ever sign up again, I still however strongly believe that twitter has vast business potentials that still remain unexploited especially in Europe. Like Xing figured out a strategy for LinkedIn in Germany, I think a similar strategy can be worked-out for twitter in Europe without necessarily giving it another name.

Today’s posting will look at some symptom of resistance to change by employees in an organization.
Have you ever wondered how your employees, friends or family members may react if you tell them you plan to do things differently than has always been the case? You think you see the dangers of the usual ways of doing things but you are not sure if every other person may be able to buy your idea and you wonder how they may react to it.
