Why innovation management?
The problem for the vast majority of companies is not a lack of good ideas, but their successful implementation in products or services. Most innovations fail on the way to product/market maturity because organizations often take too long to test their solutions with customers and find out whether they meet their needs.
In traditional product development, ideas go through so-called stage-gate processes, in which a decision is made at fixed points as to whether the idea should be pursued further or not. We once counted 22 gates for one of our customers. In other words, a product idea had to survive 22 yes/no decisions in order to qualify for a test in the market. In purely statistical terms, the probability of 1:484 that the product idea would be ready for the market was therefore extremely low in this case.
Agile product development is about ensuring a “fast lane” for innovations by developing new product ideas in small steps and according to the principle of “fail fast and cheap”.
However, the development of an innovative product idea is not enough in times of ever shorter product life cycles to make organizations competitive in the long term. Innovation is only repeatable and systematic if a company has a culture of innovation, i.e. a system of hierarchical and procedural rules that promotes and even favors innovation.
